Since 1979 Universal
Accounting Center has been committed to promoting the role of
accountant and tax preparer in business.
In 1950, the founder of Universal Accounting, Alf Bostrom began a financial consulting company, which eventually established the business model for Universal Accounting. Metropolitan Business Bureau Incorporated provided complete business and financial management, organization, and consultation.
For a percentage of potential future profits, he managed failing
businesses, many on the brink of bankruptcy, and promised to turn
them around using his own capital and lines of credit. What business
owner wouldn’t take that offer? Alf didn’t earn a dime
unless the business became successful.
Many businesses were in need of finding ways to control finances, and find personnel to run their internal processes effectively. However, few professionals understood enough about the complete accounting process to fill these needs with any degree of effectiveness.
As an individual contractor, Alf would step into the CEO position within a company and set up a fully functioning management system, complete with accounting and bookkeeping, and the trained personnel to manage it. Unfortunately, he found that most of the graduates he interviewed did not understand the full accounting process.
He also found that training each individual was not an efficient use of his limited time. In order to focus his efforts and maximize his time, he developed a system to train these individuals collectively, in a classroom setting, and give them the knowledge base to run the company successfully.
He designed a system of instruction for full-charge bookkeeping and accounting. In 1979, Universal Training Systems was born, and functioned under the parent company, Metropolitan Business Bureau. Over the next few years, the training of individuals took on a life of its own—Alf’s time was split between managing companies and training professionals.
Most of his students were graduates from the University of Utah who had earned their Master’s Degrees, but they were not receiving full-charge bookkeeping knowledge as part of their education. With his new comprehensive, live training he gave them the experience and knowledge to competently manage accurate and functioning accounting systems. He quickly learned that, by adding some accounting basics, he could teach anyone, regardless of their experience or education, how to understand and manage the full accounting system for small businesses. His training system gave hands-on experience in the daily operations for a variety of industries, making it one of the most valuable training programs available, without requiring years of study.
Over a period of several years, schools were established and operated in several California locations, including La Mesa, San Diego, Escondido, Irvine, and San Marcos, and also across the US in Denver, New York, and New Jersey.
In 1994, Alf and his wife Betty officially retired, and Alf’s son Allen Bostrom took over as CEO of the newly named: Universal Accounting Center.
Since 1994, the school has evolved from offering local live courses to selling and supporting home-based study materials for bookkeeping, accounting, tax preparation and marketing for small-business accounting services. Universal also offers instruction in QuickBooks, the market’s leading accounting software. Over the last ten years, Universal has grown from a five-person operation to over 50 employees.
