I am more than likely going to purchase the Universal Accounting material. Before I do, I have some general questions regarding certification. Would I need to be certified in Quickbooks and Payroll also. If so, can anybody recommend good learning material to become certified? Thanks for your help! Amber

quickbooks certificatiom is a extremely expensive form of advertising that has limited value . IMHO

As far as payroll certification this is even more expensive than the quickbooks certification. I specialize in payroll and found it unnecessary to achieve certification in either one. Personally I am currently studying for the CB and ABA certification. To me, this is pof much more value to me and my clients.

Thanks for your response. How do I learn to offer payroll also if I do not need to be certified? Does Universal Accounting train in payroll also? I have done payroll in the past for my husband's business but I would like to make sure that the right amount of taxes are being deducted and so on. Also, why is getting Quickbooks certified a waste of time? How am I supposed to learn how to use the software proficiently?

In the second module of the Professional Bookkeeper program, Pratical Small Business Application you are trained in payroll with great detail.

For more information please go here

Notice the training that you receive in Tape 2

Amber,
I am certified in QuickBooks I find it to a valuable asset because you learn tips about the software and how to use it efficiently. Along with the certification you have access to QB forums and other help to assist you. You also get free software and discounts. If you are planning to use QuickBooks for your business you can't go wrong with the certification. Go to www.quickbooks.com for more information about the QB proadvisor certification program. Hope this helps.

What is an ABA certification? What is it for and what is required to get certified? Does UA offer the course?

"Would I need to be certified in Quickbooks?"

No, in my opinion you do not *need* to be certified in QB to operate a successful bookkeeping practice. I did it for seven years without *any* type of certification at all and averaged about $50 an hour.

However, I do feel that the QB certification course is excellent for those of us who understand full charge bookkeeping but are unfamiliar with QB. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the course and am glad I'm taking it.

I recommend the UA Course first, before the QB certification. The UA Course gives an outstanding presentation of the complete accounting cycle--information which is absolutely essential to a successful bookkeeping practice. The QB course assumes that the student already has a (more than) fundamental grasp of accounting principles. If you take the QB course first without understanding accounting principles you will be lost and it will be a waste of your money.

I cannot comment on Payroll Certification since I am unfamiliar with any courses or schools which offer it.

So my advice is to take the UA Course first and get your PB designation. At that point you will be able to start aquiring clients. The UA Course has excellent marketing techniques which, if you follow them, I can assure you that you will get clients and make the kind of money UA says you can make.

After that you can take the QB course and get that designation. It will be more valuable to you then.
