I was recently hired by a client to do their books, the client had a bookkeeper, and he said he was not satisfied with the service. He asked me if I would contact the predecessor bookkeeper and informed them, that I will be the successor bookkeeper. From a professional perspective; I don't think I should be the one informing the predecessor, it should be the client, is my view on the matter correct? Thanks

I am not sure what is the proper thing to do. As a bookkeeper I would not feel comfortable calling my client's former bookkeeper to get his file. I prefer my client to do that.

| Your client should be informing the old bookkeeper that they have hired someone new (you). If you need any information from the old bookkeeper they may cooperate and work with you or they may toss you a box to go through. But - again it is not your respnsibility to inform the old bookkeeper of the change. Good luck ! |

I agree with the others on this. Your client should be the one who contacts the former bookkeeper. If they do not wish to make the contact in person, a nice letter would do fine. In the letter, they should mention that you will now take on the bookkeeping responsibilities and that the former bookkeeper can give you whatever information you might need.
If YOU were the one to contact the former bookkeeper, how would they know you were indeed retained to take on the books without talking the the client???? |

Tell them you would be happy to inform the other service for $100 (about the price of a lawyer to type a letter). If they pay the $100, write the letter and then go buy yourself a latte, if not, they will inform the old service themselves. Personal attention is not doing their dirty work for free.
good luck! |

| I have worked in a small CPA firm, and part of our service was to contact the former accountant for the client. Simply write the former accountant a professional letter requesting prior year records, any current bookkeeping information, tax return copies, etc. Be sure to invite the former accountant to call you if they have any further questions. It seems the least you can do for a new client who has chosen you over another professional. |
