I have my first potential client but we are struggling to get her Quickbooks 2000 file to open my computer. When I try to open it in 2000 it says that it is a 1-STEP file and that it is not a Quickbooks file or that the file is corrupt. We have tried several things and nothing seems to work. I don't want to lose my first client over this problem. Has anyone else seen this problem before and how do you fix it?

I know that 2000 is a very old version but she does not have the money to upgrade so please do not tell me that this is the answer.

Chris: I honestly do not understand your comment that she does not have the money to upgrade. If she does not have the money to upgrade she does not have the money to pay you. Personally I would find out her real reasons not to upgrade or dump her.

I agree with Richard. If this client does not have $199 to upgrade to a newer version of QB, how can they pay you???
QB 2000 is too old of a version for you to support or really work with effectively. I would try to find out the resistance to an upgrade.
When I was first getting started, I too fell into the trap of working for clients for very little beacuse they could not afford a lot of money. Then I realized that I am a professional and I deserve to get what I am worth. More clients will come, I promise. Don't fall into this.

Look, I understand you all saying about the not being able to pay me....I know she can pay me and yes she probably can afford to upgrade. I am just trying to get started here...so does anyone know what the problem might be. Thank you.

Her version of the software is too old. I tell my clients that I do all of their work on my pc and my software. This has spared me all of those problems. You will see more often than not that small biz's work on old software. Because they are not in the accounting industry they feel they do not need to upgrade until situations like this come along. If they have a lot of information on their program I just print it out and rekey it into my pc. It is probably useless to have them make a disc of the information since your software may not accept it because their software isn't upgraded. I hope this helps. Assuming that someone can not afford to upgrade is ignorant. Assuming someone will not pay is just simply uncalled for. Instead ask her why she decided not to upgrade her software. Trust me she will more than likely not understand why she needs to. BECAUSE she is not in the accounting industry.
