I recently completed the Universal Accounting course and found it to be one of the best educational experiences ever. The problem is that in the state of California, for a bookkeeper with no real experience, 24 months of supervised accounting oversight is required before testing for certification. Certification is required in order to do financial statements. I have solicited assistance from bookkeeper associations, CPA's, bookkeepers, but cannot find anyone willing to provide support. (I have E&O coverage as a Notary.) Does anyone, particularly Californians, have any ideas that would help me get the necessary supervision? I would like to work from home part-time and build up my clientele, while continuing to work full-time. I do not feel comfortable soliciting for customers without any supervision. Thank you.

I am also in California. You do not need to be certified to do bookkeeping in CA. Where are you located in CA ? What City ? I am in Southern CA - Orange County.

It is my understanding that in CA you do not have to be certified to do basic bookkeeping, only to audit financial statements. I would check further into it if I were you. I am also in CA and just getting started. I am on some bookkeeping email lists through yahoogroups were there are alot of people from CA also. I will ask there as well.
