Does the family of a deceased 78 year old man with no spouse and no assets (was receiving SS and pension) need to file a tax return in the year he died?

You will treat the return as if the deceases is still living. If he is required to file a tax return for that year file it as normal but put DECEASED at the top of the 1040.
