I've been looking at the UAC cource for a while and have a quick question.

Has anyone used the information (and the PB designation) they received in the course to help them find a job?

I realize that the general idea of the course is to help you 'start your own' bookkeeping business, but what if you have no income (due to a layoff) and want to create steady 'RIGHT NOW' income (a job) and then look for clients at a later time.

Has anyone actually gotten a job, because of the information they learned in the course?

I can say yes, I've been doing bookkeeping for 10 years. As I was studying the course I applied for a job in the newspaper in April of this year, and I got the job I went after. I wanted part-time work so I could have time to 'start my own' bookkeeping business. What I learned in the course, that I didnt already have experience with, was the depreciation, job costing, manufacturing areas and year end closings...the yearend closings actually landed me the job. I went in the interview with confidence that I could do it and they were so impressed w/ me, that I beat out a college graduate (no offense, grads!) But it really is easier than it sounds...Anyone can learn this and now I'm teaching my husband, who hates his line of work-he wants a career change..this is a great way. This course is time-consuming, but now is a great way for you to complete it while unemployed, you'll be ready in 6 weeks and if you get a bookkeeping job, you can write off the expense of the course on your tax return! It truly is an investment you'll be glad you made-would definitely recommend you do this-now.

Thank you for the reply. You answer some of my questions, but I noticed that you stated your 10 years of bookkeeping experience. I will assume that your years of experience helped you land the job as well. Had you NOT had the 10 years experience (and ONLY the course info) would you still have been able to complete with the college grad for the position?

I can still say yes because college grads dont learn about small business accounting. They are generally taught about corporate accounting. I've worked with both types of co-workers and there is a difference in the general knowledge. The degree is good to have but in this field you are looking for small businesses and Allen does a superb job of teaching it.

Rachel,

Thank you for your answers. I decided to purchase the course and will let everyone know how it works out for me. I can't wait to start learning.

The original post stated that if you get a bookkeeping job, you can deduct the expenses of this course on your tax return. My understanding of the tax law is that you can only deduct a course if it helps you increase knowledge/skills in your current job, not to prepare for a new occupation. Correct me if I'm wrong.
