I finished the UA Bookkeeper course in 2003. Due to personal delays, I was not able to start by business. I recently finished the 2005 Quickbooks tutorial provided by UA. I have a BA and work full-time, but would like to start working as an independent contractor as soon as possible.

I have a few questions I am hoping someone can answer. I have tried to find answers on the state website, but could not find any info relative to the bookkeeping profession.

1. How open are CPA's to hiring bookkeepers in their business and help them to come up to speed?
2. Am I able to work as a bookkeeper in California with the certification provided by UA?
3. Am I able to provide financial statements before becoming officially certified as a bookkeeper?

Although California restricts the title of accountant to CPAs only there is
no such restrictions for bookkeepers. Most accountants do not do the
bookkeeping work themselves; they hire bookkeepers for that. Get your PB designation and the only limitation you should have is the limitation you put on yourself.

I really don't know. It probably varies from one CPA to another.

Quote: 2. Am I able to work as a bookkeeper in California with the certification provided by UA?

Are you asking about the legal requirements for somebody to use the title "bookkeeper"? If so, then the answer is that there are no educational or legal requirements for somebody to use that title. Anybody can be a "bookkeeper"! No formal training is required by the state.

Or, are you asking if you will be able to find work in California once you are certified by UA? If so, the answer is yes, you will be able to find work either as an employee or as a self-employeed person.

Quote: 3. Am I able to provide financial statements before becoming officially certified as a bookkeeper?

As I mentioned above, there are no legal requirements to be a bookkeeper. The only thing I would advise is that you make sure that your clients understand that your financial statements are for internal management use only, not to be used in obtaining a loan or for other purposes.

Does this help?
