I have a big problem taking tests. I choke.
I've studied this material over and over. With each test I take my scores get worse and worse. I'm totally frustrated.
Any suggestions?

Are you doing the professional bookkeeper course or the professional tax preparer course?

What specifically do you mean when you say you choke?

Well, I know the material. I use the material in business and I practice the material and still study.
Each time I take a test I freeze. Its like a mind block. I don't even remember basic material. It gets more frustrating with each test I take.
Any suggestions?

Paula,

I took a class in public speaking long ago. Haven't done any public speaking since then, but I have applied two suggestions from the course to many classes since then with great success.

The first was simple. Know 30 times more about the subject matter than you need for your talk. Fill in whatever number works for you, you get the idea. My experience is that the more I acknowledge to myself that I know, the more comfortable I am in a test environment. I'm willing to bet you know a lot more than you give yourself credit for. Go find someone who is trying to learn and help them. Or find someone who doesn't know any of it and teach them. You might just surprise yourself. Be truthful to yourself about what you know and what you can do. You have the knowledge, let it build the confidence, which will help build more knowledge, which will build more confidence...

The second was also simple. When you speak to an audience, put yourself in a frame of mind that you are speaking with close friends or family members you have invited to your house and you are in your livingroom where you are telling a story. Put yourself in a situation where you can't help but be relaxed and enjoying life and then give your speech (or in my case take my test) from there. Answer the test questions as though you are giving someone at work directions to get from work to your house.

For me, these exercises provide two benefits:
1) I don't spend my study time worrying about how I am going to do on the upcoming test and
2) If during the test I discover I did not prepare enough, I can at least be relaxed and do as well as possible on the material I did study.

Hope this wasn't too off the wall...

Harry
