I've had a stroke of good luck recently and literally fell into the perfect position for a person with a start-up. Our local community college, together with the National Science Foundation, business leaders in our community and Johns Hopkins APL is standing up a fantastic entrepreneurial program. I feel that they handed me the keys to the city because my position is to meet with local businesses in our area--after the college has made the introduction. At 6 hours a week, I took the job just for the exposure to local businesses alone, but the unexpected boon for me has been some amazingly creative round table sessions with some really smart business people. For obvious reasons, I volunteered to research some alternative (and cost effective) methods of advertising. Here is one that I thought was so great I wanted to share it with my fellow bookkeeping/accountant type start-ups:

Movie theatre ads. Despite the arguments, movie theatre ads are not going to go away and they are surprisingly affordable. In my city, the cost is $350/week. The ad plays in all 14 theatres during the pre-show for a full week. There is a one time charge to convert your submission to their format, here it's $250, but still it's very affordable. Our local, once-a-week paper charges $1300/week for a one time placement.

Good Luck with that. What I hope you recognize and what others recognize is that you have made those contacts and relationships through networking and word of mouth. Continue doing that and you will be suprised to what copmes from it.
