When starting out new Accounting/Bookkeeping business, has anyone had potential clients inquire on your experience/education credentials? Has anyone been rejected a contract due to lack of a 4yr degree/CPA certification/LPA certification?

I think most have experienced at one time or another, having a prospective client survey into their background. When you're a new start-up this can be a terrifying issue, though it doesn't have to be. There are two ways to make this a positive, rather than frightening situation:
1)Be prepared. Come with a sample of different company's books -- we call it a demonstration portfolio. Universal has one you can purchase or you can make it your self. Once the prospective client sees the reports, they'll never ask about your ability.
2)Speak with authoriity. Come to the presentation knowledgeable about the accounting concerns of the client's type of business. Also explain the benefits of accounting for their business.
3)Don't be afraid. Turn what you perceive as a negative, into a positive. Tell them they will be your first client, and so you want to make them the happiest client on earth. Also offer to guarantee your work -- if they're not happy, they don't have to pay. |
