I am trying to find out the legality of using the word "accounting" instead of "bookkeeping" in a business name. I thought I had finally decided on my business name (Peace of Mind Bookkeeping), only to discover that the name is already taken in my state (WA). I would prefer to use "accounting" anyway, but I'm wondering if that would be misleading since I am not a CPA. Does anyone know the legal scoop on this?

Check with your State Board of Accountancy -- a general search @ your state government's website will turn it up or call them -- as to the use of "accountant."

Or you may want to try something like adding the word "Services" to your business name, e.g., Peace of Mind Bookkeeping Services -- and search that out.

I have found out a few things. That as long as you dont call yourself a CPA or a PA and you do not perform their duties , everything should be legal in your company name
