I am planning on starting a bookkeeping business, later incorporating payroll services. Being that my finances are extremely limited, my plan is to use what resources I have available to me. In doing so, I want to create a bookkeeping system using Microsoft Access. Some of the success stories of individuals who have taken the UAC accounting course tell of people who have become successful, even doing books by hand. However, as I read comments listed in the forum, it's obvious that many people are well-seasoned in the business. Is there anyone out there who remembers there first days as a freelance bookkeeper, who can give sound advice to a rookie about what they believe some best practices are, especially in the area of software? What do you think about using Microsoft Access? What pitfalls may I run into? Please feel free to reply to my email address. Thank you.

Hello Vinita,

I strongly suggest that you do NOT set up an accounting system in Access. The ability to audit the system and balances, etc. would be a nightmare.

If finances are really an issue, take a look on eBay or directly at the software mfg's website for deals. I picked up AccPac's Simply Accounting for less than $20.00, including shipping costs, just before the new version came out. I knew that I didn't need to subscribe to the updated payroll schedules (you can input them yourself - or at least I know how) so I wasn't concerned about being on the most recent version. Even so, more than a year later, I can upgrade to the latest version for less than $150.

A package like this provides a sound accounting system for you that you can trust. They include Crystal Reports designer in the price so you can also customize reports. Heck of a deal for starting a practice on. Any of the low-end packages would be far better than trying to reinvent the wheel yourself while you are also trying to build your practice.

Another good software package is businessworks. Really powerful, but very easy to use.

Take care

Vinita- I have the same problem just starting out. I found out that if I enrolled in the Quick Books class at my local community college, I could also buy Quick Books Pro for $100 (as a student). Since the class was about $100, I felt this was a great deal! Quick Books + instruction for $200! I have seen Quick Books, alone for $300 and up.
