I am a new small business owner of a construction company with little background in accounting. I am trying to figure out what would suit my business most effectively, QuickBooks or Peachtree. We do not keep inventory just basically bid and sell jobs. Any suggestions? I need things as simple as possible until I can take a course or something. Do any of you know a efficent way to learn these programs?

Deanna,

In my opinion, Quickbooks is more user friendly than Peachthree and way easier to use if you dont have an accounting backgrown.
As far as learning this software on your own, I wouldn't recommend that. The reason why, because the books need to be set properly since the beginning otherwise you will end up paying a lot of money to get them cleaned later on.
I would advice you to hire someone to set up your books and show you how to use the software.

Good luck in your new business.

I would have agree with the other entry from AustinAccountant. I would look at QuickBooks Pro or the Contractor Addition. QB Pro would probably do everything you need it to to start with. You can pick it up at Sam's Club or Costco for a good discount. I would also take the sound advice to make sure it is set up correctly, and you have some basic training on the software. Universal Accounting may be able to help you find an accountant in your area to give you the support you need.

Hi Deanna,
I believe QuickBooks Pro is your best alternative. As a controller for a construction company I found it's job cost system adequate for a small companies needs. Your need for assistance with the install is going to depend on the size of your business, whether you will be using the built-in payroll features of QuickBooks and needs of your company. Yes you can develop the skills on your own to safely navigate QuickBooks. Start with "QuickBooks for Dummies" and you will be on your way. As your business grows you will want the help of a Proadvisor or Universal Accounting pro to tune up your system...Rodger Regele, MBA, QuickBooks Pro Advisor

I have worked with Quickbooks for over 10 years. I will agree that Quickbooks Pro would be great for your company. I would also like to tell you that the Quickbooks software always comes with a demo company that you can enter information to see what happens and will never effect your actual company. Also go through the tutorial step by step. A basic bookkeeping class will be very effective prior to beginning quickbooks.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!
