I am interested in starting an accounting/tax business offering e-filing of tax returns as well. A friend recently told me that you need to have good credit in order to register to e-file with the IRS. Is this true? What about paper filing? Do you need any special qualification or will a 4-year degree in accounting suffice? Please help!

I've been e-filing my clients tax returns for a few years now since registering with the IRS. My credit isn't the greatest, but I was approved, so I don't think they do a credit check on you. I think the IRS is more concerned with the tax preparer correctly filing their clients returns.

You don't need a 4 year degree in order to prepare taxes. You should take a tax course or two in order to ensure you are preparing the returns in the correct manner and you can pick up valuable tips. Also purchase some tax reference books suck as JK Lasser, in order to stay abreast of the latest changes in the tax laws
