I'm thinking of starting an accounting service business. I was doing some online research and noticed that there are a few virtual accounting companies marketing only to online businesses. Do you service only customers within your area or do you do virtual accounting also? Also what software can be used to allow clients to access their books online? Any comments/suggestions would be great. Thanks
QB online allows you to do your bookkeeping online from anywhere in the world, but I think you're limited to only one company per subscription. I think the monthly fee is like $20 or something. I'm not sure of any other programs that allow you to have multiple companies under one subscription. But also, you can easily assess the subscription charge in the invoice amount (e.g. if your ordinary monthly invoice to a client is $300, you can tack on the extra $20 as software charges, etc. and make your invoice $320 so that way you're covered for the subscription).
I personally do all my bookkeeping on my software or the client's software, BUT, I do have one client that chose for themselves the online edition, but they pay for it out of their pockets.
I was thinking about getting into the virtual market and offering my services to clients as far out as California and Hawaii, etc. But, I'm a little nervous about being so far away. With my clients, I can easily call them up or visit them if there's a check that has no reason for being written, or a credit card statement that has "K-Mart" purchases for God knows what. I did think of some simple ways to get around that, but I wanted to see how people in the industry do it first.
