I was thinking about renting office space but for the amount I'd spend in a year on rent I could fix up a room in my home pretty nice or even build a small 15 X 15 building behind my house. Do customers have any preferences as to location? Do they mind you working out of your home?

I think its all about cost. if the costs of the rental will hurt the business too much then i would go at home.

I don't think clients mind too much as most of the time as long as the house is fine and not strewn with empty beer cans and other rubbish then you shouldn't give off the wrong impression.

HTH :P

I think either is fine so long as you give a professional appearance. I worked out of home for 4 years before moving to office space - mainly from a need for extra room. Most of my clients I would visit or work for remotely so they very rarely came to my home.

If you think that you can make your room look better as a professional office. I suggest you just stick to that than renting space. Besides, you can have your own rules on your home office. In my experience, renting space is not easy as you think. There are many things to settle down first.

If you are going to build a true business you need an office that is not your home. Started our working at home for a year business was small and clients were hard to come by and when they did sign up it was all about fees. After the first child was on the way I got an office and business took off. Today we own the building 8000 sqft and occupy 4000 sq ft with 15 employees. Our office is very upscale and we replace funtiture and up grade on a regular basis. Our clients pay top fees and we get lots of refferals as they know when their friends come to see us they will be impressed and this reflects on them and their business.

Business require investment and an office is a good investment.

I work from home and nothing can be better than that. I don't have a commute and I never have to worry about the weather or traffic.

It really depends on your home office setup and how comfortable you are with having clients in your home.
